The final season of Bates Motel airs on A&E on February 20th, 2017.įun Fact: During filming of season 1 of Bates Motel, the mansion actually did not have a roof, instead the structure stopped at the ceiling of the second storey and the roof was later added in in post production. We’ve visited the set countless times over the run of the show and will deeply miss its presence. The Bates Motel set has been demolished By Cody Hamman FebruAlthough the classic PSYCHO house and motel exteriors still stand at Universal Studios Hollywood, they were not used as a. The set was extremely popular with fans of the show, local tourists, and even people just passing down the road confused as to what it was. Most of the siding, windows, and door frames have also been removed. There has been speculation that the motel section of the set would be staying, at least for now, however many of the motel’s fixtures, including exterior lighting, have been removed and all of the motel room doors were open revealing empty rooms. As of today the entire roof structure has been removed, with the largest piece sitting directly to the right of the mansion. YVRShoots first reported the deconstruction on January 25th, and we were at the set this afternoon to document what has been done since. The mansion set was used for exterior shots only as the structure was just a front with no actual interiors, while the motel had an actual office and motel suites. ![]() With the fifth, and final season currently wrapping up and preparing to air on February 20th, 2017, crews have been working at the set dismantling the gothic manor and motel. 9 The series' lead actors, Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, received particular praise for their performances in the series, with the former receiving a Primetime Emmy Award nomination and winning a Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television. I used an Android app called Smith Chart Calc, which you can find at the Google Play store, to solve the Figure 5 matching-network problem. Indeed, RF/microwave design-automation suites have Smith-chart functions, and you can find standalone tools as well. It seems there should be ways to automate this process. An app solves the impedance-matching problem. We reverse the normalization to learn that the inductor and capacitor have impedances of 95 Ω and 105 Ω, respectively. We then descend to point C, canceling the reactance added from A to B. Because that’s an admittance, we invert it to find the impedance of -1.05, with the minus sign indicating capacitance. We are just to the right of the blue b=-1 constant-susceptance circle, so let’s call it -0.95. Before we depart, we also log the admittance. We are just to the left of the x=1 red reactance circle, so let’s call it 0.95. At point B, we make our first travelogue entry, noting the reactance. At point B, we see a path straight to the load, a right turn along the blue g=0.25 constant-conductance circle. We’ll head north from A along the red r=0.25 constant-resistance circle, adding positive reactance (inductance) as we go. A Smith-chart map helps design a matching network.īecause we don’t want to add resistance, we must find paths of constant resistance or conductance from point A to point C on the 0.25 red circle. They are both real, so they fall on the horizontal axis, the source impedance where the r=0.25 circle crosses the horizontal axis (point A in Figure 5) and the load impedance where the r=4 circle crosses the horizontal axis (point C). Next, we locate these points on the Smith chart. Our source impedance becomes 0.25 and our load impedance becomes 4. I’m choosing 100 Ω as our normalization impedance because, with the values in Figure 4, the map will spread out on the chart and be easy to follow. We’ll map a journey on the Smith chart and compile a travelogue along the way. You can find L and C using a Smith chart. I propose a simple LC circuit ( Figure 4). Because we’re not building an electric heater, we will use purely reactive components. You can do a lot of algebra to find these circles’ centers and radii, or you can just flip the impedance circles horizontally.Ĭonsider a 1-GHz generator with a 25-Ω source impedance driving a 400-Ω load, for a horrendous Γ=0.882. But I can add some admittance circles to form an immittance chart ( Figure 3), where admittance Y= g+j b=1/ Z. Your chart isn’t as elaborate as some I’ve seen. An immittance chart includes admittance (blue) and impedance (red) circles. Similarly, an impedance of 2+j1 is located where the red r=2 circle crosses the blue x=1 circle (point B), where Γ= 4+j2. A resistance of 2 appears where the red r=2 resistance circle crosses the horizontal axis (point A), where you can see that Γ=0.333. Figure 2 shows some of these circles plotted on a grid representing Γ. Similarly, a locus of points representing constant reactance is a circle of radius 1/ x centered at 1, 1/ x. Noting that Z L is a complex number in the form of r+j y, you can manipulate the equation for Z L to determine that a locus of points representing constant resistance is a circle of radius 1/( r+1) centered at r/( r+1). In a Smith chart, resistance (red) and reactance (blue) are plotted on a grid representing Γ. You’ll also see it represented as the scattering parameter S 11. It’s the reflection coefficient (sometimes denoted as ρ), which we discussed in part 1. ![]() Normalization lets one Smith chart work with any characteristic impedance. This part elaborates on the Smith chart’s construction and provides an impedance-matching example. Part 1 of this FAQ looked at why you might use a Smith chart. The Smith chart remains valuable in helping to visualize how such circuits perform. A typical RF/microwave circuit includes a source, transmission line, and load. That circuit includes a source with impedance Z s, transmission line with characteristic impedance Z 0, and load with impedance Z L. ![]() Take a journey around a Smith chart to find capacitance and inductance values in a matching network.īefore computers became ubiquitous, the Smith chart simplified calculations involving the complex impedances found in RF/microwave circuits such as the one shown in Figure 1. ![]() Your enemies do not have a skull fortress. Additional funding and support for the project was provided by and The Lucie Burgers Foundation for Comparative Behaviour Research in Arnhem, The Netherlands, The Wasmoeth Wildlife Foundation, The African Wildlife Foundation and Karl Ammann. It is quite hard to imagine an all-out war between animals. The 2012 field season was carried out in collaboration with The Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and L’Institut Congolais pour La Conservation de la Nature. “Bili-Gangu's diverse mosaic of closed forest, wooded savannas and open grasslands, with its populations of chimpanzees, elephants, leopard and other large mammals, rare or extirpated elsewhere, represents one of Congo's most important opportunities for the establishment of a new conservation initiative within the Bili-Uéré complex”, says John Hart of the Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation. It is recommended that wildlife guards be installed permanently in the region to avoid an escalation of poaching. According to the researchers additional field survey projects will need to be conducted so that future conservation activities can be directed to areas where they are most needed – before it is too late. “Without proper protection these chimpanzees may succumb to the same factors that are eliminating populations of the species elsewhere”. “Increasing numbers of bush meat carcasses and chimpanzee orphans were found in Bili and nearby areas”, says Christophe Boesch, director of the Department of Primatology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. While this chimpanzee population has remained stable over the last decade, the researchers have recently found signs that it is falling under increasing threat from the bush meat trade. “This population has remained unnoticed to researchers until now and may represent the largest viable population of this subspecies, but it currently lacks any protection.” When they re-walked parts of these transects again in 2012, the researchers found that the number of chimpanzee sleeping nests had not declined since 2005. “Our results suggest that a large and widespread population of chimpanzees inhabits the forests and savannas of northern DRC”, says Thurston C. Evidence of behavioral continuity shows that the north and south groups may be connected culturally as well. They covered a total of 1,800 kilometers of reconnaissance walks to the north and 500 kilometers to the south of the Uele River as well as 160 kilometers of line transects in the Bili-Gangu Forest, and discovered a population of chimpanzees numbering in the thousands. From the existing number of chimpanzee sleeping nests they can then estimate the total number of chimpanzees in this area.įrom 2004 to 2012, a research team from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and the University of Amsterdam conducted chimpanzee surveys in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a region where chimpanzee populations have never previously been systematically assessed. In order to determine the chimpanzee population size in an area the researchers traverse it at regular intervals along parallel line transects. “In order to monitor chimpanzee population trends and to decide where to best allocate conservation resources, it is crucial that we develop the means to accurately map the species’ distribution and make precise estimates of abundance”, says Hjalmar Kuehl of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. Furthermore, chimpanzees often fall victim to poachers and are killed by human diseases. This has been a result of expanding agriculture in many African countries, as well as logging and the uncontrolled extraction of natural resources. Over the past two decades the African great apes have experienced a steep population decline, up to 90 percent in some regions. ![]() ![]() © Ephrem Mpaka, Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation Fruit is naturally sweet, and it provides vitamins, minerals, and a some fiber. To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply your figure by 2.2. So, 7.7 pounds = 7 pounds and 11 ounces (when rounded). There are approximately 2.2 pounds in 1 kilogram. Thus,ħ.7 pounds = 7 + 0.7 pounds = 7 pounds + 0.7 × 16 ounces = 7 pounds + 11.2 ounces. This works because one pound equals 16 ounces. Notice how we group the r, g, and b variables with () to create a tuple, You could use deep unpacking: > colour_info = ("AliceBlue", (240, 248, 255)) Iterables, you can unpack those iterables at once.įor example, using multiple assignment twice in a row, you could do this: > colour_info = ("AliceBlue", (240, 248, 255))īut if you already know you want to get to the separate RGB values, Is on the right-hand side of an assignment in particular, if there are nested ![]() In a similar fashion, deep unpacking allows you to match the shape of what On the right-hand side of an assignment, and get each element into a variable. Multiple assignment allows you to match the length of an iterable, Items the right-hand side will have, but all of them can be storedĭeep unpacking, or nested unpacking, is similar to multiple assignment in a sense. With starred assignment you can tell Python that you are not sure how many Starred assignment, that I covered in depth in this Pydon't,Īllows you to write things like > l = Provided the right-hand side has as many items as the left-hand side expects. With multiple assignment you can assign, well, multiple variables at the same time, > # Multiple assignment unpacks the tuple. > x, y = y, x # Multiple assignment to swap variables. In Python, multiple assignment is what allows you to write things like > x = 3 Let's have a quick look at two other nice features about Python's assignments. Assignmentsīefore showing you how deep unpacking works, Learning about deep unpacking will be very helpful in order to pave the roadįor structural matching, a feature to be introduced in Python 3.10. how to use it to improve code readability and.In this Pydon't we will go over deep unpacking: (If you are new here and have no idea what a Pydon't is, you may want to read the The most out of the structural matching feature that is to be introduced Learning about deep unpacking will also be very important in order to make However, IMO, this is better than the hack of using using multiple expressions in a tuple and returning the last one.Deep unpacking (or nested unpacking) provides a more powerful way for you toĭeep unpacking can be used to improve the readability of your code and help This is just to suggest that it can be done, and should not be taken as a recommendation. Print(min(points, key=lambda y: next(b for (a,b),c in ))) Print(min(points, key=lambda p: (lambda a,b: (lambda x,y: (y))(*a))(*p)))Īlternatively one can also use a list instead of a tuple. In comparison to the accepted answer using an unwrapper lambda: values = ![]() Print(min(values, key=lambda y: next(b for ((a,b),c) in (y,)))) In comparison with the accepted answer of using a wrapper, this solution is able to completely destructure the arguments while the wrapper only destructures the first level. Print(min(points, key=lambda y: next(x*x + y*y for (x,y) in ))) It is possible to abuse it to obtain similar behavior in Python 3. While the destructuring arguments was removed in Python3, it was not removed from comprehensions. Still, there are possible uses - if there are various one-liners that would operate on this point, it could be worth to have a namedtuple, and use the assignment expression to effectively "cast" the incoming sequence to the namedtuple: > from collections import namedtuple One should keep in mind that this kind of code will seldom be more readable or practical than having a full function. So, if one uses a trick to execute multiple expressions inside a lambda - I usually do that by creating a tuple and just returning the last component of it, it is possible to do the following: > a = lambda p:(x:=p, y:=p, x ** 2 + y ** 2) Since the release of Python 3.8, PEP 572 - assignment expressions - have been available as a tool. The way to go would be to raise this issue on the Python ideas mailing list, but be prepared to argue a lot over there to gain some traction.Īctually, just not to say "there is no way out", a third way could be to implement one more level of lambda calling just to unfold the parameters - but that would be at once more inefficient and harder to read than your two suggestions: min(points, key=lambda p: (lambda x,y: (x*x + y*y))(*p)) |
